Adolescence can be tough. It involves a huge period of transition and development. We are called upon to individuate from our parents and develop our own sense of identity. Friendships with peers become more important and trickier to navigate. School becomes more involved. We start thinking about our future. And on top of all of this, we experience biological changes that can impact how we think and feel about the world around us.
Young people aged 12 – 25 are particularly vulnerable to the
development of mental health disorders.
One in four young people report experiencing a mental health issue in
the past 12 months. In fact, 75% of
people who experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime will develop
it in this period.
We know that early intervention using evidence-based
treatments is very important. It can
help us better understand why we are experiencing something, and how we can
cope with this now and in the future. Early
intervention can also help us become more resilient. We can explore who we are, what is important
to us, and how we can make changes to better live in line with our values.
